The standards for private water wells are different than those for public wells. Home owners with their own wells will want to ensure proper inspection for water quality, as well as structural integrity. When a well is inspected, the inspector will be looking for certain water quality indicators and contaminants that may be present in the water. Contaminants can include human or animal excrement, nitrates, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). An inspector will also be testing the pH of the water. It is recommended to have an individually owned well inspected regularly, especially if you live in an area prone to flooding, notice changes in water quality, or live in an area where there are known problems with well systems.
